The biological meaning of adult means an animal that is capable of reproduction. If used in conjunction with humans, the word adult can have meanings that are connected to social or legal concepts. Legal adults are those who has reached the age of maturity. They are considered to be an independent, self-sufficient person and accountable. The term "major" may be applied to them. There is a general belief that the age at which a person legally matures is 18. However, this can differ based on the legal rights and the country of origin as well as the development of the individual's psychological.

The age of adulthood marks the point in the human lifespan when an individual has reached maturation in both physical and mental growth. Adulthood is typically thought of as beginning at age 20 or 21 years. Middle age starts at around 40 years before being followed by an old age of about 60. There are three main levels of adulthood: beginning in early adulthood (18 up to the mid-30s) and middle adulthood (mid-30s to mid-60s) and then later adulthood (mid-60s until death). By the time we reach the age of early adulthood (20 to the early 40s) the physical development is completed, though our weight and height could increase a bit. In young adulthood the physical capabilities of our bodies are at their highest such as muscle strength, reaction time sensors, as well as the functioning of our heart.
